new antique keldel bottle

What is a Kelder bottle?

"Kjelder" is case in Dutch

What is Kelder bottle?
Kelderfles is a Dutch word meaning case bottle , and comes from the ``case'' in which bottles were packed and shipped in units of 12. A Kelder bottle is an energy-saving bottle from the early modern period that has a square vertical surface and can be stored in a case without any gaps, making it highly efficient for transportation and does not require much cushioning material.

Since the 1570s, it has been manufactured as a general bottle in the Netherlands, Belgium, and northern Germany, and with the increase in global gin consumption since the 1770s, the shape changed from vertical to tapered. The vertical type had a tendency to stick together when pulled out of the mold, making it unsuitable for mass production. At that time, Japan was in an era of national isolation. Many Kölder bottles arrived in Japan from the Netherlands, the only country with which Japan had diplomatic relations.
However, it is almost impossible to see these days.

Easily create a different space with a new antique bottle

The irregular fluctuation of the glass exceeds the lighting

Keldel Bottle and Pantera
In the dark, the bottle looks angular and blue-black, but when the light hits it, it transforms into an enchanting blue-green that makes you want to hold your camera.
This bottle, called a Keldel bottle, is also popular as an antique, but OH's Keldel bottle is a new product that is carefully made one by one in a small factory in Japan. Therefore, even though it is in a relatively affordable price range, it has a unique design that no two pieces are the same. The light that passes through the bottle forms an irregular pattern similar to the surface of water, making it a top-class interior accent.
This light, which cannot be created even if you aim for it, is the opposite of designer lighting. But please try placing it in front of a light.

Just by placing it there, the atmosphere changes completely.

The beauty of non-essentials

Kelder bottle as a jug
A long time ago, at an Italian restaurant, I had someone pour me water from a wine bottle. Plastic water jugs hold a lot more, are more convenient, and are more common. But I remember feeling a little happy.
When you try using a Keldel bottle as a water jug at your table, you'll be surprised how much your mood changes. It makes you realize how important small changes are when it comes to space. I guess you could call it beauty even though it's not a necessity.

As a slightly rich jug
Of course, you can also enjoy it by adding your favorite alcohol. Very stylish.
And please try using it with a thin glass sommelier cup . Although they are the same glass, they have completely different beauties that complement each other.
Also, the sound of "dopu dopu dopu" when pouring makes me feel a little rich.

By the way, both the Keldel bottle and cork stopper are new . Cork becomes loose as you use it, so think of it more as a lid to prevent dust than a stopper to seal it.

Both fresh and dried flowers look great

Blue brings out fresh flowers even more

Dried flowers as a vase
Speaking of glass bottles, we can't forget how they can be used as vases.
The small mouth and solid, stable shape are similar to goblet bases . Small flowers such as plum and cherry blossoms in spring and cosmos in autumn. In the summer, slightly longer branched plants such as azaleas are also good.

Cool sense of unity with dried flowers

Make dried flowers even more beautiful
When the weather gets colder and winter arrives, it's great to coordinate with a light worldview using dried flowers. Thanks to the blue color of the bottle, it doesn't feel lonely. Place it in a bright place and enjoy it as a vase where the light will be on your side.

Kelder bottles, olives, and Sori Yanagi's folk crafts

photogenic

Things, photos, and daily life

Potsun and one bookstore
Just one bookstore. Even a single bottle with a cup will make a picture.

Cactus and Kelder bottle
Perhaps the reason why I never get tired of looking at it is because it has a soft, life-like expression, just like a plant.

Fluctuations of light just like the sea
This fluctuation is now an ocean.

Features of Kelder bottle

About the characteristics of Kelder bottle

It is made using old-fashioned techniques, with the addition of human hands. As a result, the surface has large bubbles and unevenness. Please consider this as a unique feature, with no two being the same.
bubbles
There may also be slightly larger air bubbles. In fact, you could say that's its charm.

strange shaped bubbles
You may also see bubbles with unusual shapes.

distortion
There may also be round distortions.

unevenness on the sides
There may also be unevenness on the side of the bottle, similar to the flow of a river.

The story from oh

Rediscovery from the Age of Exploration

Age of Discovery

The encounter between oh, a bottle that travels through the Age of Exploration, and Kelder bottle begins with the craft gin brand MAWSIM. The brand concept states:

" Age of Rediscovery "
- Both the new continent and the pepper-bearing plants have been with someone from the beginning.
We call rediscovery the act of noticing new value in things that already exist. Now, the era of rediscovery begins.

“MAWSIM” means “season” in Arabic. Origin of the word monsoon.
It is named after the ``wind,'' which brought many sailing ships searching for spices during the Age of Exploration, and brought Dutch gin to Nagasaki during the period of national isolation.

Craft Gin MAWSIM

During Japan's period of national isolation, an empty gin bottle was dumped into the sea by a sailor on a Dutch ship that was authorized to trade in Nagasaki Port. Eventually, it was discovered by a tea master and was prized as a flower vase to decorate the tea room. . That is why in Japan, many Kelder bottles have been passed down in paulownia boxes. Based on this suggestion, MAWSIM's gin bottle was designed with the premise of being used as a carafe or vase. Because it is semi-artificially made in a small factory in Tokyo, it has unique expressions such as fluctuations, bubbles, and hair lines, and no two pieces are the same. -

Yes, this bottle was originally designed for the MAWSIM bottle.
As a vase for dried flowers

One day, I was staring at an empty bottle. ``It looks like it washed up from the ocean somewhere.'' I thought to myself. Whether it contains gin or not, only those who have drunk it will understand how attractive this bottle is as a craft bottle. The number of people who like alcohol and don't drink is increasing, but I feel like it's a bit of a waste.

If that's the case, I think that delivering each handmade craft product to the hands of everyone who visits oh will be a new "rediscovery."
